This hand-knotted Persian rug is known as Tabriz, that refers to the area where it is made. Tabriz is the capital of a Province in the north west of Iran called Azarbaijan. Tabriz has achieved a very good reputation for producing fine quality hand-knotted rugs and carpets for over centuries.
This rug is made of pure fine wool (around 60-70% and silk (around 30-40%) on cotton weft (fringe). It has 324 knots per square inch. Its size is: 79 inches x 60 inches so the total size is: 82 x 62 = 5084 square inches so the total number of knots is: 1,647,216. A craftsman with an average speed could manage to weave around 600 knots per hour so it takes around 2745 hours to weave this rug; of course, this is the last process of producing a rug; there are four professions involved to produce a rug: making the loom, that depending of the sizes it takes around a few days; drawing and colouring in the design, dying the material and weaving.
The design of this rug is classic medallion.
