Persian Handmade Carpet

This top quality Persian hand-knotted carpet is known as Kashan Ghotbi. Kashan is the name of an ancient city in the central part of Iran (about 220 k from the capital, Tehran) and it is one of the main Persian handmade carpets and rugs centres. Kashan handmade carpets and rugs are famous for unlimited intricate designs, high density of knots, hardwearing and long lasting (there is one in V & A museum in London about 400 years old).  Ghotbi is a Kashan brand that has achieved a good reputation for weaving fine pieces and master work.

This amazing handmade carpet is made kurk (fine lamb wool) and silk (about 75% kurk and 25% silk) and cotton weft. It has about 289 knots per square inch, the total size is 18683  square inch so it has about 5,399,387 knots (18683 x 289). A craftsman or craftswoman with an average speed could manage to weave around 8000 knots per day (considering the complexity of the pattern) so it takes about 674 days for a craftsman to make this carpet (of course the jobs for making the loom, dye the material and draw and colouring the design is not included in this calculation).

It has a classic medallion design with a star at the centre opened to the 16 heart-shapes that is 8 x 2. No “8 ” in Persian mythology and mysticism refers to Perfection , now why times 2? because as everybody is combination of male and female or like shadow and light. We also have floral motif and then four corners with four hearts (total 16 again) then a main border with lotus motif (symbol of purification and growing pure) and three sided borders with floral motif.
