This beautiful hand-knotted Persian rug is known as Kashan Joshaghan, named after the region where it is crafted. There are three villages in Persia called Joshaghan, but the one we’re referring to is located in the Kashan region, often referred to as Joshaghan Ghali (where “Ghali” means carpet). Joshaghan is one of the few villages that has earned worldwide recognition for its unique and special designs. The main motif in Joshaghan rugs is Shandlin, typically decorated with floral patterns. The philosophy behind this motif is rooted in the ancient Persian tradition of Illumination, known as Hekmate Khosravani. “Hekmat” is a Persian word for philosophy, which also encompasses mysticism and mythology.

Joshaghan Carpet

Joshaghan has been one of the important carpet-weaving centers in Iran since ancient times, and carpets with Joshaghan designs are generally well known and recognized. Although several carpets and rug pieces from Joshaghan are attributed to the Safavid period, the history of carpet weaving in Joshaghan goes back to before the Safavid era.

In discussing the background of carpet weaving in Joshaghan, reference is made to the writings of Abolfazl Allami in the book Ain-i Akbari, where he says: “Joshaghan is one of the four centers from which carpets are sent to India.” Also, Alexander the Turkmen notes that silk carpets woven in Joshaghan and Kerman reached the Ottoman court, indicating that Joshaghan was a place of royal carpet workshops.

The weaving of silk carpets in Joshaghan was common in the past, and during the Safavid era numerous workshops were active there. In a decree issued in the year 950 AH by Shah Tahmasp Safavi, based on instructions for the reception of Humayun, the king of India, it is mentioned that among the gifts specifically prepared for Humayun Shah were woven items and three pairs of carpets, two of which were from Joshaghan.

Hakim Rukn al-Din Masih Kashani, a poet of the Safavid period, composed poetry about the silk carpets of Joshaghan. Shah Suleiman Safavi, in 1082 AH, ordered fourteen carpet pieces in Qom for the tomb of Shah Abbas II, which were woven in Joshaghan by Nematollah Joshaghani. These carpets are currently preserved in the museums of Qom and Ancient Iran.
