Persian Kashan

Dimensions

This exquisite Persian Kashan hand-knotted rug takes its name from the historic city of Kashan, located in central Iran. For centuries, Kashan has been celebrated worldwide for producing some of the finest handmade carpets, renowned for their intricate designs, durability, and exceptionally high knot density.

Kashan’s reputation is rooted in a long and distinguished weaving tradition. A historic Kashan masterpiece featuring the Sheikh Safi design—now preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London—dates back over 400 years, reflecting the enduring legacy of this weaving center.

Due to the global popularity of Kashan rugs, similar designs are produced in countries such as Pakistan, India, and China. However, authentic Persian Kashan carpets remain unmatched in craftsmanship, quality, and long-term value.

Design & Craftsmanship

This handwoven carpet features the classic Tabatabaee medallion design, one of the most respected and recognizable styles in Kashan. Tabatabaee is a well-known and prestigious name associated with fine Kashan rugs.

  • Pile: Very fine, pure wool
  • Foundation: Cotton warp and weft (fringe)
  • Knot Density: 169 knots per square inch
  • Total Knots: Approximately 6,474,052 knots

With an average weaving speed of 8,000–10,000 knots per day, it would take a single skilled craftsman approximately 647 days to complete a carpet of this complexity. Weaving is only one of four specialized skills involved in rug production—the others include design drafting and coloring, dyeing the wool, and constructing the loom.
