Authentic Hand-Knotted Kashan Persian Rug – Fine Kurk Wool, 225 KPSI

This beautiful hand-knotted Persian rug, known as Kashan, is named after the ancient city of Kashan in central Iran, located approximately 240 km south of Tehran. For centuries, Kashan has earned a stellar reputation for producing some of the finest and most elegant handmade carpets in the world. Due to this prestige, Kashan-inspired designs are widely replicated in India, China, and Pakistan; however, original Kashan rugs remain unmatched in quality, craftsmanship, and long-term value.

Expertly crafted from high-quality Kurk (fine lamb’s wool), this rug offers exceptional softness, durability, and clarity of design. With a knot density of 225 knots per square inch, it reflects the precision and skill associated with traditional Kashan weaving.

Designs and colours are another influential factor in the identity of Kashan carpets.

Carpet patterns across all regions of Kashan share some general characteristics of Iranian carpet design, including naturalism (avoidance of abstraction) and innovation in simple methods. They also share certain qualities of Surrealism. Rural and tribal designs share similarities with one another.

Considering all Kashan carpets, one can observe several categories:

  • Mythical and legendary motifs: These roots lie in myths and ancient stories, many of which have prehistorical origins. Examples include the Simurgh, dragon, horse, peacock, tree of life, and eagle.
  • Religious and spiritual symbols: Such as the tree (cypress), sun (Mehr), star, water basin, mihrab, which were added after the advent of Islam.
  • Nature motifs (naturalistic): Including tree, bird, red flower, forest, river, mountain, pond, sky, garden, water.
  • Animal motifs (figurative): Such as horse, rooster, fish, and goat.
  • Regional motifs: Some patterns and designs differ in various regions.
  • Historical and epic motifs: Derived from literature, epics, and historical narratives such as Shirin, Khosrow, Jamshid, Shahpour, heroic figures, Shahnameh scenes (Rostam and Sohrab), etc.
  • Temporary motifs: Princes, rulers, and some famous figures.

In Kashan carpets, two completely different types are found: carpets woven with Joshaghan patterns and carpets with special designs and maps.
